M. LASLO-KUTCIUK - A RESEARCHER OF T. SHVCHENKO'S WORKS (ON THE POLEMICS OF M. LASLO-KUTCIUK WITH H. HRABOVYCH)

Abstract

The article examines the reasons why the history of Taras Shevchenko’s self-portrait was hushed up by the tsar, and later by the Soviet authorities. For many years there were only episodic attempts of individual Ukrainian researchers to remember it and comment on it in a certain way, as well as the circumstances of its creation and the details of the picture, which became the subject of discussion between M. Laszlo-Kutsyuk and H. Hrabovych.

As a result of the conducted research, it was established that the controversial intentions of the polemics of the mentioned literary experts regarding the self-portrait of the naked T. Shevchenko do not indicate any fundamental differences in their methodological research positions. Despite separate observations and remarks, both M. Laszlo-Kutsyuk and H. Hrabovych interpret the symbolism of T. Shevchenko's self-portrait as a certain form of personal creative self-identification, as a sign of a peculiar, albeit humorous, but protest against the oppression of the human, creative personality in the conditions of those censors restrictions imposed on it by the Russian autocracy and, in fact, those canonized and templated models of its perception in the research and reader's general perception of the artist's creative heritage.
