Abstract

Shevchenko in the poem “The Blind” (“Slave”) creates an example of a phenomenal combination of human destiny and a separate stage of Ukrainian history, when Ukraine was at the stage of the most difficult historical trials. The poet's optimism in his view of man reveals the artist’s optimistic vision of Ukrainian history.

Shevchenko’s poem «The Blind» («Slave») shows the intensity and continuity of the struggle of the Ukrainian people against the external enemy. This struggle, however, provides Ukrainians with stability of spirit and nobility of deeds  – the way to a progressive existence in the circle of nations.
